What we can comment on

Our founders can explain how these attacks work, what we see when we take them down, and what a company can do about them. Not sure which fits your story? Email us and we will match you with the right founder.

  • Lookalike domains

Web addresses made to look like a real company's (typosquatting): how criminals choose them, and how to spot one.

  • Fake invoices and payment fraud

Emails from a lookalike domain that ask a company's customers to pay new bank details (business email compromise, or BEC).

  • Copied websites and fake login pages

Copies of a company's website that take payments or collect passwords, and how they are found.

  • Fake online stores

Shops that use a brand's name to take orders, and what the brand can do for its customers.

  • Taking fakes down

Who can take a fake site or email domain offline, and what evidence they need. Most takedowns take between 2 and 96 hours, depending on the registrar and host.

  • Securing your own domain

The email security settings (DMARC, SPF and DKIM) and other gaps in a company's own domains that make impersonation easier.

Our founders

James Bending and David Batey started DefendDomain in 2025 and give our comment and interviews. Their photos are free to use with coverage of DefendDomain.

James Bending

James Bending

Co-founder and CCO

For over 20 years James has helped some of the world's largest businesses resolve critical issues, and watched cyber security move to the top of the boardroom agenda.

In his previous roles he worked with over 1,000 customers, and saw how many attacks start with someone pretending to be a company people already trust. In 2025 he co-founded DefendDomain to find those fake domains and get them taken down.

David Batey

David Batey

Co-founder and CTO

For over 20 years David has built web applications. A computer science graduate, he has founded, grown and sold tech businesses, and was lead developer at a start-up acquired by eBay.

He saw more and more attacks that copy a company's whole website, and in 2025 he co-founded DefendDomain to find those copies and get them removed.

Short description

47 words

DefendDomain finds web addresses made to look like a company's own and gets them taken down. Criminals use these lookalike domains to send fake invoices, copy websites and steal logins. DefendDomain is a UK company, founded in 2025, with customers in the US, UK, EU and Asia-Pacific.

Long description

161 words

DefendDomain finds web addresses made to look like a company's own and gets them taken down. Criminals register these lookalike domains, such as an address one letter away from the real one, to send fake invoices with new bank details, copy websites, run fake online stores and steal logins.

DefendDomain checks around 500 lookalikes of each domain it protects every hour, and watches public certificate logs as new entries appear. When a lookalike is used in an attack, one click sends the evidence to up to 12 places that can act on it, including the registrar, the host and the email provider. It also checks a company's own domains every day for gaps that make impersonation easier.

Founded in 2025 by James Bending and David Batey, DefendDomain is ISO 27001 certified and won Cyber Security Start-up of the Year at the teiss Awards 2026. It has sales in London, engineering in Oxford and customers in the US, UK, EU and Asia-Pacific.

Our sector

Brand protection

DefendDomain works in brand protection, also called digital risk protection: finding and removing the fake websites, email addresses and accounts that use a company's name.

Where we specialise

Domains: the web addresses criminals register to look like a real company's, including the ones set up only to send email, with no website, such as those used for fake invoices.

What we do not do

We do not remove social media accounts or ads, police marketplaces or the dark web, or recover money that has already been paid.

  • 6m+lookalike domains checked every month
  • 75m+new website certificates checked every day
  • 400k+visits to customer websites checked for copies every month
