DefendDomain

Different problems, compared honestly

DefendDomain compared to BrandShield

BrandShield is built for trademark and brand enforcement teams, a related discipline to Digital Risk Protection (DRP) rather than the same one.

BrandShield is a brand protection platform weighted towards trademark enforcement and counterfeit removal for consumer and retail brands. DefendDomain is a security product aimed at the domains criminals register to defraud your customers, your staff and your suppliers, so the two mostly serve different buyers inside a business.

What BrandShield does well, and who should buy them

Taken from what BrandShield publishes about its own product. If this is the shape of your problem, they are a reasonable buy and we will say so.

Counterfeit and marketplace enforcement

Removing fake listings at volume across marketplaces is operationally hard and they have built a business on doing it. If counterfeit goods are eating your revenue, that is the capability you need and it is not ours.

Trademark and IP workflow

Their platform is built for legal and IP teams as much as security teams, which matters if enforcement in your business runs through counsel rather than through a SOC.

Consumer and retail brand experience

Their published material skews to consumer brands with high counterfeit exposure. For that shape of business, the platform is built around the right problem.

They publish for smaller buyers too

Unusually for this category, they run a page aimed at small and medium businesses rather than only at enterprises. If you are sizing vendors by who will take your call, that is worth knowing.

They also watch registrations and certificates

Their domain protection material describes monitoring new domain registrations, DNS records and certificates across every extension, and detecting look-alikes before they are used. Early detection is contested ground here, not empty ground, and we would rather say so.

Where DefendDomain goes deeper

We work on one layer, which is the domains registered to impersonate you. Everything we build goes into finding them early and shutting them down fast.

A security problem, not an IP problem

Most look-alike domains do their damage as fraud rather than as a trademark matter. The harm lands as a cloned login page taking your staff credentials, a fake invoice redirecting a supplier payment, or a customer handing card details to a copy of your checkout.

The mail axis, and the domains that host nothing

We fingerprint the mail setup of every registered look-alike, on MX, SPF senders, DKIM and DMARC, and capture the arming transitions. A domain registered purely to send a handful of fake invoices never hosts a page, so nothing that looks for content will find it, and it is the one that empties a bank account fastest.

Markers on every page, paired with content fingerprinting

Invisible markers on every page of your site fire when your content loads on a domain you do not control, and distinctive phrases from your site are swept across search engines continuously. Neither is described in their published material.

Your own posture, graded

Layer 5 scans your own domains and subdomains daily for email authentication, DNS hygiene and takeover risk, TLS, web hardening and exposure, and returns an A to F scorecard with per-finding remediation. Brand enforcement platforms look outward only.

Choose BrandShield if

  • Counterfeit listings on marketplaces are costing you real revenue.
  • Enforcement in your business runs through legal and IP rather than through security.
  • You are a consumer or retail brand where trademark abuse is the dominant risk.
  • You need paid search abuse, social media and rogue mobile apps covered as well as domains.
  • The same brand abuse case tends to surface on a marketplace, a social account and a domain at once, and you want it handled as one case rather than three.

Choose DefendDomain if

  • The threat on your register is fraud against your customers, staff and suppliers rather than counterfeit goods.
  • You are B2B, so marketplace counterfeits are irrelevant but a fake invoice from a look-alike supplier domain is not.
  • You want the look-alikes with no website caught on their mail records before anything is sent.
  • You want markers on every page of your site and phrase-level fingerprinting hunting for copies of your content.
  • You want your own email authentication, DNS, TLS and web hardening graded as well as watched.

What each of us costs

Not everyone in this category publishes a price, so here is the shape of it rather than a number we cannot stand behind.

What BrandShield publishes

BrandShield does not publish a price list. Reported annual values run from roughly $65,000 to $329,000, from buyer and analyst estimates rather than a vendor quote.

What moves the number

Enforcement platforms tend to price against the volume of infringement you have and the number of marketplaces and jurisdictions in scope.

How DefendDomain charges

Takedowns are unlimited on every plan and cost nothing extra per enforcement. We can price it that way because we work one surface rather than six.

What moving actually involves

There is no security agent to deploy and no data to migrate. The one thing that touches your site is the Layer 2 marker, and that is a copy-paste job rather than an integration. That makes this a shorter conversation than most security purchases, so here is the honest version of it.

  1. Work out whose budget this is

If the brief came from legal or brand, an enforcement platform is the right shape and we are not a replacement for it. If it came from security, the brief is impersonation and phishing, and that is ours.

  2. Most companies that need both, buy both

These are not competing line items. Counterfeit enforcement and domain impersonation defence solve different problems for different teams, and running one does not cover the other.

  3. Try us on the security half

Run a proof of value on your real domains. It will show you quickly whether the impersonation half of your problem is being covered by what you already have.

Questions buyers ask us about BrandShield

Is BrandShield an alternative to DefendDomain, or a different category?

Mostly a different category, and treating them as interchangeable leads to a bad purchase either way. BrandShield is built for trademark and brand enforcement: counterfeits on marketplaces, IP abuse, paid search abuse. DefendDomain is built for impersonation: the domain registered to phish your staff, clone your checkout or invoice your finance team. Companies with both problems generally run both. If you only have budget for one, the deciding question is whether your last real scare was a fake product or a fake login page.

Is domain impersonation a legal problem or a security problem?

Both, but the money is usually on the security side. A trademark process can eventually recover a domain. It will not help the supplier who has already paid a fake invoice or the member of staff who has already typed their credentials into a copy of your login page. That damage happens in the days after the domain goes live, which is why the useful work is finding it early and taking it offline fast.

Does DefendDomain handle counterfeit products?

No. Marketplace enforcement and counterfeit takedown are deliberately out of scope, and a platform built for that will do it better than we would. We cover the domain layer: look-alike domains, cloned sites, stolen content, fraudulent certificates and the security posture of your own domains.

We are B2B. Does brand protection apply to us at all?

The counterfeit half of it usually does not. The fraud half very much does. B2B companies invoice customers for meaningful amounts, which makes a look-alike of your domain valuable to somebody who wants a supplier payment redirected. Most of our customers are B2B and came to us after a cloned website or a fake invoice, not after a counterfeit listing.
